Overview
The scope of CARE's mission has changed considerably since its founding, when 22 American organizations came together to rush life-saving "CARE packages" to survivors of the Second World War. On May 11, 1946, with help from Canada, the first 20,000 packages reached the battered port of Le Havre, France. Some 100 million more CARE packages reached people in need during the next two decades, first in Europe and later in Asia and other parts of the developing world.

Overview
CARE Austria, Association for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, was founded in 1986. CARE Austria is politically and ideologically independent. The team of CARE Austria currently consists of 30 employees.
Creation of CARE Austria
After World War II, Austria was in ruins; the people were starving. But, most important were the 1 million CARE packages that were distributed throughout the country. 40 years later, Austria was one of the richest countries in the world and was thus in a position to give assistance in the world who were also going through hardships. CARE Austria was founded in May 1986 as the eighth member of the international aid organization CARE. Today, headquartered in Vienna, CARE Austria has its hands in about 30 projects in Africa, Asia and South East Europe, basing their work on the ideology that lasting impact comes from helping others "help themselves".
50 million people could be helped
CARE Austria is one of twelve leading national independent organizations of CARE International, CARE Austria regularly supports the project work of CARE International and independent projects. Since its inception, CARE Austria has a total of 348 projects in 50 countries. CARE Austria since then has reached about 50 million people, not only aiding them physically, but helping them achieve a life of dignity.
{clear.gif}
CARE Austria receives about 69% of funding from public funds from the European Union, 12% of public funds from the domestic market, and 17% of funds account for donations from private sources. 89% of funds are invested directly into projects. 8% accounts for information and education, and 3% goes to administration.
Project work focus for CARE Austria in 2008 was in the Middle East. 44% of expenditure was focused here. 25% of expenditures went to projects in Asia, followed by Africa with 23%, and then Eastern Europe with 8%.

Overview
CARE International is one of the world’s top three aid agencies, fighting poverty and injustice in over 70 countries around the world and helping 65 million people each year to find routes out of poverty.
Our mission is to create lasting change in poor communities and we put money where it is needed most.
With more than 60 years’ practical and hands-on experience, our programmes tackle the deep-seated root causes of poverty, not just the consequences.
Changing people’s lives also means changing the world around them – so we work in partnership with businesses and governments all around the world to help them do their bit to confront poverty too. It’s an approach that has a much more sustainable impact than superficial quick fixes will ever do.
We believe passionately in the dignity of all people and make a long-term commitment to stay with the communities we work with until the job gets done. That’s because we deal with challenging and complex issues - like HIV and AIDS or conflict – that do not have quick-fix solutions. We know the sticking plaster approach to aid does not work.
When disaster strikes, we are also one of the first to respond, ensuring that aid gets to where it is needed most. We can do this because we’ve often been working in countries for many years, and we stay to help communities rebuild their lives long after the tv cameras have gone.
We are a pioneering organisation and have constantly improved our work and increased our impact over the years.
